Maybe humans were created to adapt, protect, and belong. Therefore, contradiction isn’t a flaw so much as evidence of multiple forces pulling at once. Whoever designed this, I would love to invite to dinner.

At any given moment, a person can hold competing truths. How they handle them is for a different journal entry. But what I have noticed in myself, and others is that we want freedom… and security. We want to be known… and protected. We value honesty… but often fear its cost.

So behavior bends; well, mine has been programmed to.

Part of it is structural; minds aren’t a single, clean voice. I remember Tristen, my longtime friend and therapist, saying that cognitive dissonance is how we hold conflicting beliefs and quietly adjust one to reduce discomfort… not always consciously… often through subtle rewrites of our own narratives. Goodness knows, I am constantly rewiring and revising mine.

Knowing that part of it is developmental—what we learn early stays. And those pesky attachment patterns (from Attachment Theory), for example, can make someone crave closeness while pushing it away because of learned behaviors from our early childhood experiences. So they look inconsistent… but internally, they’re consistent with an older blueprint. It’s so fascinating to me, but also wildly weird.

Another aspect of our behavior that can be contradictory is situational—identity shifts depending on context. The version of someone at dinner, with family, in love, or under stress… those aren’t identical selves. They’re responses to different emotional environments. Amen to that.

What is most interesting and quieter underneath it all: people often act in alignment not with what they say they value—but with what they feel they can safely sustain.

This is where Tristen reminds me that I see in myself and in others who speak about depth… but avoid it when it arrives. Someone who values connection… but withdraws when it becomes real. Someone who is generous… until they feel unseen. Each contradiction carries underlying meaning within the context of our learned experiences. Not hypocrisy, only capacity limits.

And then there’s the hardest truth: awareness…which doesn’t automatically lead to change. This has been my biggest frustration, as I have done the digging and excavation to see the parallels and inconsistencies in my own life, and I am open about them. Certain people can see themselves clearly yet still repeat the same pattern because changing it would cost them something they’re not ready to lose.

Therefore, I have accepted that contradiction is often the surface expression of an internal negotiation: between who someone is… who they’ve been… and who they’re not yet ready to become. This changes how I interact with and understand people’s incongruent behaviors.

If you’re noticing it more lately, it usually means your clarity has sharpened. You’re spotting patterns faster… and tolerating them less.

It isn’t about them being more contradictory—it’s about you being less willing to pretend they aren’t. That has been my experience lately.

I continue to see that people aren’t built to be perfectly consistent.
