{"id":1485,"date":"2026-06-23T03:55:42","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T03:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prolificpreambles.com\/?p=1485"},"modified":"2026-06-23T03:55:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T03:55:43","slug":"reframing-regret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prolificpreambles.com\/?p=1485","title":{"rendered":"Reframing Regret"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Recently, someone shared a quote with me that I can\u2019t shake: <em>\u201cOn your last day on Earth, the person you became meets the person you could have become.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some call it hell, and at first, I could understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my years volunteering with Hospice, I\u2019ve heard people speak of their regrets\u2014the risks not taken, the dreams postponed, the conversations avoided, the version of themselves they wished they had become.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image is unsettling, a final reckoning with every missed opportunity. It is standing face-to-face with the person who wrote the book, started the business, spoke the truth, loved more boldly, or simply stopped waiting for the \u201cright time.\u201d But the longer I sat with dying patients and with the quote, the more I wondered whether it assumes something that isn\u2019t true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if the person I could have become never had to walk through the life I was given?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if she had never lost her father at eleven?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if she grew up in a home where safety was assumed rather than earned?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if she had never spent years carrying responsibilities that were never hers to carry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if she never learned survival before she learned freedom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then a different question emerged: would she actually be me at all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every wound, every detour, every season of grief, resilience, confusion, courage, and reinvention shaped the person standing here now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps that is the flaw in the quote. It asks us to measure ourselves against a life we never lived rather than to understand the one we did.
